The Irish Council for International Students (ICOS) is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Chair. Nicola Carroll, Head of International Office, National College of Ireland takes over the position from Suzanne Buckley from UCC who had served for two years.
After her appointment at ICOS’ September Board meeting, Nicola Carroll said that she hoped the her term would see, “a genuinely united and coordinated approach to the internationalisation of our education services, one which would bring benefits to higher education institutions through the successful recruitment of international students and which would benefit all students through a greater focus on support services and the quality of the student experience”.
Ms Carroll added that ICOS was keen to support the national effort to put Ireland on the map as a quality destination for international students, but this would only happen in a properly regulated environment. “The Government’s strategy on International Education and its new policy on student immigration will be central to Ireland’s effort to get the balance right. Less than transparent immigration policies and the absence of a coherent national strategy are currently undermining the efforts of genuine institutions to establish themselves in international markets while international students themselves remain vulnerable to exploitation by bogus colleges who continue to operate freely here. This situation has been allowed to continue for far too long”, said Ms Carroll.
