Fairtrade Fortnight: Showing Off Our Label

2/3/11 - To mark Fairtrade Fortnight, ICOS staff donned Fairtrade T-shirts to show their support for this year's theme 'Show Off Your Label', which is putting the focus on cotton.

Fairtrade Ireland explain: "Cotton can carry our Fairtrade message far beyond a slogan on a t-shirt. Cotton’s link to the fashion industry, and its place in our lifestyles, means that the potential impact of our cotton focus goes well beyond the category itself."

ICOS' is a long-standing supporter of Fairtrade principles and development justice. Our role with the Irish Aid Fellowship Training Programme gives us a very positive connection to the countries of the Global South. It also allows us to contribute to Irish Aid's overall development work, which includes support for Fairtrade programmes in Central America and in East Africa and development education work in Ireland.

Want to know more about Fairtrade?

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.
