International Student Mobility Charter launched in Dublin by EAIE
The European Association for International Education (EAIE) used the opportunity of its Dublin Conference in September 2012 to formally launch its International Student Mobility Charter.
The basic premise of the charter is the growth of student mobility must be supported by clear and unequivocal policies and measures which ensure that students’ human rights are understood and protected by governments and higher education institutions alike. The Charter covers areas including equity of treatment, intercultural competence of staff, integration of international students and transparent and efficient processing of student visa applications.
ICOS would like to draw particular attention to paragraph 9 of the Charter - Student Rights Support - which calls for having an independent authority available “to which students can turn for a resolution of their legitimate problems, disputes or concerns or, if necessary, for legal advice pertaining to their studies, status or welfare”. No such authority exists in Ireland and many student problems go unaddressed. The time is right for this deficit in our system to be remedied.
