Finding a Course - A guide for international students

Where can I get more information about courses and studying in Ireland?

Education Ireland is the official site promoting Ireland as a destination for students and is your best starting point for choosing a course. It is a very comprehensive resource: as well as a directory of courses and information on how to apply, it provides an overview of the Irish education system, study advice and some useful pointers about living and studying in Ireland. It also explains the system of recognition of qualifications and outlines details of a number of scholariship schemes.

In addition, Education Ireland produces an Introductory Guide for International Students

What are some of the main issues in applying?

You should make sure that you read the information given for each course carefully and that you can meet all of the requirements set out.

In particular, you should make sure that you find out:

  • the level of education needed for admission and which of your qualifications will be recognised
  • the level of English required and any language certificates you will need to present
  • whether any work/voluntary experience is also required
  • if you will need to present a portfolio of work
  • the minimum age for admission to the course

IMPORTANT: You should also check if the course is recognised by the Irish Government or other official bodies. For example, only a recognised nursing course will allow you to work in the Irish health system after your studies. Read more about the Internationalisation Register and recognised courses.

What else do I need to consider?

Before you apply and especially before paying any fees, there are a number of important issues you need to check out. These include...

- Do I need a visa to study in Ireland?

- How much money will I need to live in Ireland?

- Will I be able to work while I study?
