Report aims for more international students for Dublin
26/7/11 - A Dublin City Council report on strategies to boost international student numbers in the city has called for greater co-operation between state agencies, local authorities and the education sector. Among more than 30 specific recommendations are better alignment of visa and study cycles, improved gathering of views and feedback from international students and the launch of a new award scheme to recognise their contribution to city life.
Lord Mayor, Andrew Montague, launched the report entitled 'Developing and Promoting Dublin as an International Student City' at a workshop in City Hall on 25th July. The event was also addressed by Minister for Education and Skills RuairĂ Quinn.
Through a mixture of promotion and enhancing the student experience, city authorities hope to give a boost to the city's attractiveness as a destination. According to the report, Dublin currently plays host to around 10,300 international students pursuing full-time courses, plus a further 4,000 on part-time programmes. In addition, up to 60,000 language students choose the city for their courses each year.
