English language requirements to study in Ireland

What are the English language proficiency requirements for third-level study in Ireland?

If you require a visa to study in Ireland, you must also have undertaken an English Language exam recognised by the Department of Justice to take up third level or postgraduate study. For details see below.

Colleges and universities will also usually have specific language requirements, although these vary significantly from one course to another. You should contact the International Office or Admissions Office at the institution to check this information for the course you are interested in.

What English Language exams are recognised by the Department of Justice?

Full details and required scores are given in the Department's Student Visa Guidelines. The list includes:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
  • Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE)
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
  • English Test for Academic and Professional Purposes (ETAPP)

The Department recommends the IELTS exam for visa purposes.

Any certificate must have been issued within 2 years of the expected start date of your course.

What if I want to come to Ireland to learn English?

The English language requirements for a student visa do not apply to English language courses, but you must meet all other requirements. You should also ensure that you apply to a recognised English language course. The maximum time a student may stay in Ireland for the purpose of attending courses at language/non degree level is limited to three years
